How to clean 14k gold Jewelry without Jewelry cleaner?

Is there a way to clean Jewelry without using Jewelry cleaner? I heard it's expensive so I was thinking I'd see if theres any other way to clean it. I have a 14k, or maybe 18k gold class ring and a 14k gold cross. Someone told me if you put dawn dishsoap in a cup of water, just a little bit of soap too, and warm it up in the microwave, then put the jewlery in it, that will clean it and it won't damage it. But I'm nervous it will melt lol or something in warm water. anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
